Bopha Angkor Hotel
I only walked by it a couple of times, but the Bopha Angkor Hotel looked like a good option for those who want a little more upscale place that is within walking distance of the Old Market and Pub Street district. It is in the $50 range, has a pool and restaurant, and is just across the river from downtown. It looked really nice but gets mixed reviews on TripAdvisor. Lonely Planet says that it was recently renovated. That may explain why all of the newer reviews are good or excellent.
Comparison: about average
Price: US$40-80

Mandalay Inn
The Mandalay Inn is clean, comfortable and in a convenient location in the south part of Siem Reap about three blocks from Psar Chaa, the Old Market. The staff are very friendly and helpful. The hotel restaurant has reasonable prices and is pretty good, especially the Asian breakfasts. Airport or bus station pick up is included in the room rate. There is free Wi-Fi if you bring your own computer. Also, there are a couple of computers in the lobby. They had remodeled the whole downstairs patio/lobby/restaurant area between the two times I had been there (Mar 09 and Mar 10). It was not bad before but now it is really nice. The Mandalay Inn is such a bargain that it stays pretty full during the dry (tourist) season. You should make reservations beforehand. It's easy to do on their web page. The only downside that I have had in 11 days at the Mandalay Inn was that there were some guests that came in late and were noisy one of the nights when I was there in 2009.
Unique Qualities: There is a rooftop gym but I did not use it.
Comparison: less expensive than average
Directions: One half block south and one half block west of the intersection of Pokambor Avenue and Sivatha Boulevard
Price: less than US$20

Terrasse des Elephants Hotel
I did not stay there or even go inside but the Terrasse des Elephants Hotel is in the perfect location if you want to be within close walking distance of the Old Market and Pub Street district in Siem Reap. This hotel gets excellent reviews on TripAdvisor. This is an upscale place in a prime location and is priced accordingly.
Directions: On Sivatha Boulevard and Street 10, one block southwest of the Old Market
Price: US$80-120

Ei8ht Rooms Guesthouse
The Ei8ht Rooms Guesthouse was my second choice in Siem Reap. I ended up picking the Mandalay Inn because it was $16/night vs. $24/night for Ei8ht Rooms. I did go by Ei8ht Rooms to check it out though. It gets great reviews on TripAdvisor and I can see why. The staff were very friendly and showed me around even though I was not staying there. The location is on a quiet street by the back entrance to Artisans D'Angkor in the south part of Siem Reap about two blocks from Psar Chaa (Old Market) and very close to the Angkor Night Bazaar. There is no hotel restaurant but the rooms are larger and nicer than those at the Mandalay Inn. The lobby had two computers with free internet access.
Unique Qualities: There is a quiet rooftop garden veranda.
Comparison: less expensive than average
Directions: Near back entrance to Artisans D'Angkor
Price: US$20-40

Mandalay Inn Lobby
The Mandalay Inn is actually two separate buildings with a common area in the front. The first floor on the left has the lobby and the first floor on the right has the indoor dining area. My room was good sized with a double bed, air conditioning and an ensuite bathroom for $16. It was a corner room in the back of the hotel and had no views out the windows; however, it was quieter back there (the street in front of the hotel is quite busy). The rooms on the front probably have nice views of the city but there are also outdoor balconies upstairs where you may sit and have the same views.
Comparison: less expensive than average
Price: less than US$20
