"The Pearl of the Adriatic" Dubrovnik (former name-Ragusa) was founded in the first half of the 7th century. At first it was consisted of 2 villages, out of which one was on the island. Then these two villages were connected into one – and due to that today, the Stradun (main street in the Old Town) is basically build on the water. Dubrovnik today is a small town with about 50,000 inhabitants. In the past it was very powerful trading and maritime point. At one point it was considered to be one of the major competitors to Venice, and Venetians attacked it on more than one occasion. To protect themselves, Dubrovnik people built the beautiful City Walls and many forts. Dubrovnik is on the list of UNESCO world heritage. This town is very proud of rich history (it used to be A Republic of Dubrovnik – until Napoleon and the French entered Dubrovnik in 1806), architecture, natural beauties (islands, beaches,..), and for being pioneers at many things. Dubrovnik had a first quarantine hospital back in 1337, the Supreme Medical Council was established in 1424, in 1432 the Orphanage was opened, the waterworks was constructed in 1436 and the first pharmacy in Europe was in – Dubrovnik. |
