When we began researching our family history online, we came across many Scottish-born ancestors. Of course, this naturally increased our interest in the culture behind our family blood-line!
We met a distant cousin at one of the genealogy research websites, which ultimately took us to Scotland in September of 2002 to meet him and his family - our family - in the land of our ancestors.
Our newly-found family then visited us here in the US for the Christmas holidays. During that time, they attended our Christmas concerts where we rang a special song for his wife and him. (We teach and direct handbell choirs consisting of home-educated students.) That was a special moment for all of us.
We have found our Scottish roots have never left, even though our pioneering ancestors came to America in the late 1700's and 1800's. You see, an "American" is really nothing more than a mixture of Europe and many other nationalities of the world!
We will be returning to Scotland once again with our teenaged handbell choir in tow. We're looking forward to sharing our Scottish roots with them (many of them also have Scottish ancestry.) We will be ringing Christian inspirational songs of comfort, hope, and joy in cancer treatment centers across Scotland, and for large groups of young children, as well.
- Pros:Scotland has both lovely scenery and wonderful people!
- Cons:Could there be any?!
- In a nutshell:When your family is from Scotland, it makes Scotland feel like your own.
