Chamonix Contains the Grandeur of the French Alps

by ringleader - last update: Mar 2, 2004

Mont Blanc, the crown jewel of the French Alps

Chamonix Valley from Aiguille du Midi
After landing in Geneva, Switzerland, the first place we headed for in our 4,500+ mile drive around Europe was Chamonix.

Before we boarded the plane in the US, we found ourselves talking to a physics professor who had lived in Chamonix for a number of years.

"You have to go to Aiguille du Midi (If you can't find Aiguille du Midi, look for Mont Blanc!) on the cable cars, " he said. " My wife and I... every time we see it a very clear day, we go (went) up there..."

Check the weather before you go. It is the all-important deciding factor!

Chamonix Visitors' Center

Make sure you stop in the Chamonix Visitors' Center if you need connections to the different activities or hours for the cable car operation.

Don't Spare the Film!

If you have a digital camera, make good use of it here! These mountains are really some of the most breathtaking views we saw in all of our tours of the French, German, Austrian, and Swiss Alps. You feel like they are really close to you...

Pros:"Definitely a place to go to the top of Europe!"
Cons:"Watch for bad weather warnings."
In A Nutshell:"A must-see if you're there on a clear day!"

You can't actually take a cable car to the top of Mt Blanc. It is a many many many hour mountain climb from the top of the Aiguille du Midi lift, which is the one I assume you are speaking about.
