Don't Forget to Stop at Roadside Shops

I can't tell you too much about my experiences in Swaziland, as it simply happened to be a convenient country to pass through on our way from Kruger National Park to Moçambique, where our volunteer efforts would continue.

The country is highly mountainous, and thus the roads are reasonably good as far as the scenery goes.

Throughout the entire trip through the country, there were a number of roadside stands selling all manner of goods. We stopped at one of these little stores, perched on the edge of a very steep hill and with no named town really that close by (and thus nowhere to put a VT tip!!!). There were quite a number of small wooden toys, carvings, artwork and various other items to purchase that appeared to be very unique.

Bartering is a fact of life in this part of the world, and so it is worthwhile to try to get a lower price for your purchase. I find it very difficult to try to do this, but at the same time, in this culture it is expected that one barter with vendors. If you have struck a good deal, the seller will complain bitterly about your miserly ways, but if they really will suffer a loss with the sale then they would not have made it to you. It is all part of the give and take of buying things where prices are negotiated, and not an area of commerce I have ever really been comfortable with.
