I had an overnight layover on the way from going from Moçambique to Zambia. On the return, I had a 1 day layover here, and went out on the Soweto township tour. Therefore, my time spent in "Joburg" was very limited. I'm not even going to try to describe the city or try to pretend I know it well.
What I can tell you is that things here can be quite agressive and dangerous. Even in 2006, large numbers of exiles were coming across the border from Zimbabwe every day. Desperate for any sort of income, some of these individuals can represent a safety hazard. Exiting the secured part of the airport, people are assaulted with agressive taxi drivers wanting someone (anyone!) to ride with them. This high pressure sales environment continues in a number of situations. Just be prepared for it. |
