My flight into J-Burg arrived late at night, and it wasn't a long enough time for me to transfer to my USA bound flight that same evening, so as sheduled I had almost an entire day at the hotel in J-Burg.
What to do?
I decided on the Soweto Tour, which I felt was a very good decision. There are an amazing number of things in this place.
Despite the reputation of Soweto being one vast slum of poverty due to racism problems, there are actually some fairly wealthy areas, and some middle class. The area appears to have changed vastly since the news reports we saw as teenagers in the 1980s.
Here you will find several museums dedicated to the past events involving protests against the unjust social system that South Africa used to have, and the effort it took to get those problems corrected.
And, unfortunately, there are still some very poor slum areas in Soweto. |
