I stayed in room 405, which has a decent view across the river to Namibia.
There is definitely an African game lodge feel to this place. One can imagine any famous African explorer walking through
these hallways (though the famous people that stayed here in the past are mostly movie stars and other celebrities).
There are several different packages available here, including the "all inclusive" package which means laundry, drinks (you can tell Hollywood celebrities stayed here in the 50's: there are two bars and one dining hall), and just about anything else you can imagine is covered under one price (which is naturally quite high).
Reasonably high speed internet access (considering the remote location) is available in the
upstairs bar at a fee.
Boat trips and
game drives leave right from the main lodge building, making it very convenient and very time efficient: no drive through town to get here since you are already in the middle of the main attraction anyway!
The
carving on the wall in my room that appeared to be a fertility charm of some sort was an interesting feature of the room.
Unique Qualities: The accomodations are expensive, and it is known as a place where world famous people have stayed.
However, this is the only place in this area where one can spend the night inside the national park. If you stay in town, you face a long, slow trek from town just to get to some of the best game viewing areas. Here, you are already in the park and have a jump on everyone else. This does not necessarily guarantee great game viewing, but it does mean that during the early morning hours, when you are most likely to see some interesting things, you are already inside the park when the open hours start.
African artwork examples: A huge wooden door hangs on the wall, with a plaque on it describing the tribe that carved it and a litte of their history. Bathroom sinks are works of art as well, and guests are protected by
tribal sculptures that scare away evil (and come equipped with descriptive plaques as well!).
Light covers in the dining hall are held on with wood carved with African wildlife and not some off the shelf thing one can mail order from China.
Bathroom sinks are works of art here also. Then, there is the
Toilet Tiki (for lack of a better name for it) that inhabited the bathroom in my room.
