Visit Corcovado in the Morning if You Want A Photo Christ The Redeemer, Corcovado Review

If you go to Corcovado, and you want the best photo of the Christ, be sure to visit in the morning.

If you go in the afternoon, the sun rotates behind the statue so that the front of the statue is in shadow. This doesn't create a very good photograph.

This photo, which is a detail of a photo on my Corcovado Railway Travelogue, illustrates the problem. It is an afternoon shot, and the sun has cast Christ in shadow.

This photo, by the way, looks acceptable on my slide film due to the way the slide projector lights up the slide. Print film and scanning the slide film results in a much darker image and would have been better under morning light. This would have been an even worse problem during a day with brighter sunlight. This was a partially cloudy day!!

Famous Statue of Christ - seen from all over Rio Christ The Redeemer, Corcovado Review

Corcovado is one of the most famous landmarks in the world, and many many other Virtual Tourist members have written about it. There is very little I can add to what they have already said.

This photo of the statue was taken from the very end of the Santa Tereza Streetcar line, in an area of Rio de Janeiro known as Silvestre. Although the streetcars do not run there regularly anymore, there is a bus to within 100 feet of where this photo was taken.

Directions: See the Corcovado railway's web site (listed below) for more information, in several different languages. This is the incline railway that climbs to the summit of the hill.

What else is there to say? Pão de Açucar (Sugarloaf) is a must see.

This photo of Sugarloaf was taken from a sharp curve of the Santa Tereza Streetcar line, near the top of the hill, near a fire department building.
