The Brazilian Association for the Preservation of the Railway ( ABPF ) has a local chapter in Rio Negrinho. The organization owns a number of steam locomotives. Unfortunately, with limited resources, only one of them has been made operational so far.
However, the locomotive and passenger cars that do run are in good condition.
The train passes through a section of mountainous forested land, until it arrives at a small road that crosses the tracks near a church.
The railway preservation society at Rio Negrinho has a number of steam locomotives that they would like to restore tooperation, as well as a number of passenger cars.
For more photos, please see the Travelogue for Rio Negrinho.
there is also a picnic area, and a kitchen and cafeteria have been constructed in the area that appears to have at one time been the church's stable.
The food served for lunch are items typical of the region and local culture.
Understand that this area is not a huge tourist area like Rio de Janeiro or other big international tourist cities. The tourists that visit Rio Negrinho are almost always Brazilian. Therefore, if you want to participate in lunch conversations here with some very interesting local people, it is best to learn some Portuguese.
The line also has some freight service on it, so you may encounter a few America Latina Logistica freight trains while there as well.
The web site for the Associação Brasileira de Preservação Ferroviária (ABPF) Regional de Santa Catarina contains more information (in Portuguese) about the operation of their train, and has some photographs.

Be sure to take a look at the photos of their operations. They have done extended trips at times, and some of the places along this line, both on the regular trip and on the special trips, are quite interesting.
