Hula Dancing: Aloha Festival
  • Tip Rating:
  • If you're in Honolulu in September, be sure and catch the Aloha Festival, which generally spans a week. The Aloha Festival features hula dancers, local cuisine, local music, leis, all types of vendors, etc. The Waikiki Ho'olaule'a includes several stages, plenty of music, and food and crafts booths.

    Statues: King Kamehameha Statue
  • Tip Rating:
  • American sculptor, Thomas R. Gould, was commissioned to create this statue, and subsequently modeled the figure at his studio in Rome in 1879. It was then cast in bronze in Paris in 1880, but was lost in a shipwreck en route to Hawaii. The second statue, cast from the same mold, arrived unharmed. The first statue was eventually recovered and stands in front of the Kohala Court House in Kapa'au on Hawaii, while the second is located in front of the Judiciary Building in Honolulu.

    Waikiki Beach: Waikiki Beach
  • Tip Rating:
  • You never know what you might find amongst the surfboards!

This beach stretches for two miles, fronted by hotels and Kapiolani Park. You can swim, canoe, surf, and snorkel here. Facilities include lifeguards, picnic areas, telephones, showers, and restrooms.

    Beyond Honolulu: Sacred Falls
  • Tip Rating:
  • Unfortunately, what used to be an easy/medium hike is no longer open to the public due to a rock slide in May, 1999. The trail is four miles round-trip.

    Beyond Honolulu: Chinaman's Hat
  • Tip Rating:
  • One of Oahu's offshore islands, Chinaman's Hat can be reached by kayak, water raft, or sailboard. Its sandy ocean-facing beach is unsafe for swimming.

Things To Do: Byodo-In Temple in the Valley of the Temples
  • Tip Rating:
  • Completed in 1968, this temple was built without using a single nail. It is a scale replica of a 900-year old temple in Uji Japan. This temple represents a phoenix, whose wings are upheld by stone pillars. The most significant sight is the 5 foot, 3 ton brass bell with its calming tone. If you ring the bell upon arrival at the temple, it is said to bring good fortune. The 9-foot buddha inside the temple is covered with gold leaf and lacquer. Thousands of koi swim in the reflecting pools surrounding the temple. There is a $2.00 admission charge.
