"FENLAND VIEWS" Upwell by BerniShand
Upwell Travel Guide: 20 reviews and 103 photos
Well, we made it, after years of city dwelling we are, at last, exactly where we want to be, in a little bungalow in the country.
Instead of looking out onto thousands of bricks l now have views of open fields from my kitchen window, and am gifted every night to a beautiful sunset
We are no longer the `new neighbours` we have been here over a year now, now we feel we belong
Most of the village shops are gone - killed off by discount stores with Sunday openings in nearby Wisbech and the fact that most people now have access to at least one vehicle, but we have the basics.... a Post Office / Gift Shop, two butchers, two hairdressers, an excellent fish and chip shop and a small general store, so we shouldnt starve or have bad hair days, and lots of farm shops selling all the fresh fruit and vegetables from the fertile Fenland soil
There are a few pubs in Upwell, but our favourite [and nearest] the Red Hart is actually in the next village, Three Holes, but its close enough to be able to walk home, albeit a bit unsteadily
I have just been reading the village website, [www.upwellvillage.co.uk]the Parish Council is keen to promote tourism in Upwell, and deservedly so, it is a pretty village along the banks of Well Creek, the navigational link between the rivers Ouse and Nene, with some fine examples of architecture, rounding the bend after the Post Office gives a lovely view of the river and the houses, making returning home such a pleasure for me, often with the bonus of brightly painted barges gliding along or the resdent family of swans shepherding their little family to the reeds
Nearby is Welney with its famous wildfowl and wetlands nature reserve, Wisbech, a Georgian market town, and lots of open countryside
Gillian [ VT member GillianMcLauchlin ] came to visit, we eventually found an open gate and wandered around the St Peters church and graveyard
the church was open, either that or Gillian picked the lock while I wasnt looking !

The Hulk, witches, windmills, sea of pumpkins, and beautiful sunsets...hmmm if you only had a shoe store I'd say you live in a fairytale town my dear :))
Enjoyed a rummage through your Upwell page Berni! Love your river pic. Oh and if hubby and I do decide to venture past sounds like the Red Hart might be a good vt meet spot ;o) Cheers, Ann xx
