"Bremen" Freie Hansestadt Bremen by turnip2000

Bremen is a great city to visit to get a feel for northern Germany. So many people picture Germany as just Lederhosen & sausage, but there is a whole other half (the North!) to explore. Bremen was founded in 787 by Charlemagne(Karl der Grosse) and became the base from which Scandanavia was introduced to Christianity. Bremen is located on the Weser river and is known for its maritime industries, Beck's beer, liberal(green) politics and the famous fairy tale "the town musicians of Bremen". Make sure you visit the "Marktplatz", "Boettchergasse" and the beautiful "Schnoor" district. Oh yeah, you can try all the beer at Beck's you like. Take a tour and get ready to walk(stagger) home. Also located on the main market square is this "Rathaus" or courthouse. Dating from 1410 one can still see a row of windows with sandstone figures representing Charlemagne and seven prince-electors. A good example of Weser Renaissance style is also noteworthy on the balcony. Make sure you go inside and see a huge hanging ship! It is unbelievable!
