Like everywhere in the world you must take some precaution when you go to some crowded area.
Athens is very SAFE but watch out for pick pockets in crowded areas.
The best way is to be aware of your belongings. A good idea is to buy if you are a little bit paranoiac the pouch with the belt loop you hang inside your trousers next to your skin.
