The county town of North Yorkshire since 1974 this is a town generally missed by the tourist but well worth a stop if travelling on the A19 or as a base for exploring the northern dales or the nearby moors.
The town was a stopping place on several north - south routes in the days of coaching and it is still possible to see the coaching inns in the broad high street.
It is a major shopping centre in an affluent area and hosts a very good market on Wednesdays.
This is a large rural area and there are several shops selling related goods and an occasional farmers market.

The town is basicaly the broad High Street running through the town but the town hosts a surprising number of arcades running off the High Street. There are some interesting shops to be found in these arcades and they are well worth exploring.

The town has one of the broadest High Streets in the north of England. It is spacious and pleasant to walk along. Good access for people using wheelchairs or mobility scooters.
