Restaurant Name: Mother Hubbards
For great fish and chips try Mother Hubbards in Scarborough. This is where the locals go for fish and chips as its not too visible from the street unless you really look or actually know where it is. The entrance is very small (see photo) on Westborough and then there are two flights of stairs (no lift and not accessible at all for disabled people) that take you in to the large dining area. You do need stand near the cash desk to be told where to sit and there are sometimes queues because of the popularity of this restaurant.
And it is as you would expect for a Yorkshire fish and chip restaurant - red leather seats and benches with tables with white table cloths and the usual accompaniments. The waitresses are traditionally dressed in black dresses and white blouses and the place is timeless. It will no doubt be the same in 2015 as it was in 1965.
The fish (haddock of course - cod is for southern softies!) is white and flaky and is fresh from Scarborough and Whitby. The chips are perfect and large and a golden brown and there is of course mushy peas - naturally served with bread and butter and pots of strong Yorkshire tea ( and I have just realised no one from outside England will understand a word of this).
A little hot in the summer and some ceiling fans would help or air conditioning.
Highly recommended.
Favorite Dish: The haddock is the best in Scarborough. The food is piping hot and well presented. Not a great range of deserts - apple pie or ice cream basically. However I have never seen anyone have a desert as the main meals are so large.
New in July 2009 on my most recent visit - small fish, chips and peas at £5.00. With bread and butter and tea of course but very good value and the small fish are not much smaller than the medium haddock.
