A typical English village If you are in Hull and want to see a typical English village a 153 bus will bring you to Swanland in 30 minutes. The village is unique for East Yorkshire because it is at the top of a hill and every road in to the village is up a hill. In the village centre is a wonderful tea shop called Olivers, a newish pub and a few local shops but the best thing about Swanland is the pleasant walk you can make around the village - ask at Olivers or the post office for a leaflet. Swanland is probably East Yorkshires most exclusive village - 68% of property here is detached and no other town or vilage in the county can compare to this. Mainly a Hull and Leeds commuter town it is the older people who contribute mainly to village life but there is a thriving village association and I feel very lucky to be able to live here. |
East Yorkshire countryside The East Yorkshire countryside around Swanland is pleasant and green. The countryside is mainly gently rolling hills offering good views down to the River Humber. Good horse riding country - there is an equestrian centre in the village - and good rambling country. This is generally an unexplored area and unknown to many of the people who speed by on the nearby the A63 in and out of Hull. |
| The pond looking to West End |
The centre of the village The village centres on the pond and the few small shops we have in West End - these pages have more details. The pond was man made many years ago but still gives the village character and a focal point. There is a Christmas concert around the pond in December and it is used for other occasions. The bus to and from Hull stops here and waiting for the bus here on a spring morning makes me think this is probably the best place in England to wait for a bus. Even in the winter the pond has some interest as the photo shows. |

Thanks for stopping by! | nicolaitan Tue Apr 24, 2007 12:29 UTC What a lovely village you live in - it's so, well, English. I love a place where watching the pond freeze over is a thing to do.
