No English tea or German bier - good

Although the city features in northern European holiday brochures very few people from these countries here rarely visit here and most holiday makers here are from the Spanish mainland.
We were pleasantly surprised and delighted to find no English beer or tea or German beers on sale. This is a holiday destination for everyone and anyone but Spanish culture is dominant and that is great we think.
The shop and restaurant staff speak some English - a little German - but people generally know no other language than Spanish.

An old and new city

This is a very old city with a wonderful old town and beautiful old church dominating the area around the harbour.
A new town of high rise blocks was added in the 1980s and this is found to the north of the town. The two parts do compliment each other quite well but both have one thing in common - a high concentration of closed shops and cafes. I would estimate that 30% of establishments are closed (late 2013) and this spoils what could be a more vibrant city. Like many places in Europe the recession has not been kind to this city.

A scenic town

The town rises steeply from the harbour and promenade to the high land at the back of the town - take a taxi to Park Taoro for great views of the town - especially the old town as seen here.

this place is really pretty, great botanical garden, great views, and the plaza de la iglesia is indeed very pretty. the canaries get very little touristic play in the states, perhaps because a bit difficult to get to. your page makes them very attractive.

very nice page, never heard of this place. the canary islands do not get a lot of play from american tourist sources, a long trip. guess beach villages all over the world have lots in common especially the tacky souvenir stores and "discount" electronics.
