the Minang highlands

the Minangkabau wedding stage
Bukittinggi, meaning 'high hill', is a city in West Sumatra province famed for its beautiful panorama and colonial era heritage, formerly named Fort De Cock by the Dutch. It is surrounded by three volcanoes, Tandikat, Singgalang and Merapi.
Jam Gadang ~ landmark of Bukittinggi
Perhaps because it is a Muslim town, Bukittinggi, as with the entire Minang land of West Sumatra, is superb for street cleanliness. Being 930 metres above sea level, it has a cool climate of between 18 to 23 degree Celsius. The best hotels of the Minang land are located here. A two-hour drive from Padang, Bukittinggi makes a good starting point for trips to the Minang neighbourhoods.

Jam Gadang, built in 1827, is the town’s landmark, overlooking the bustling market place that is crammed with fruit, vegetables and clothing stalls, and rickety horsecarts whose drivers insist on squeezing through the colourful chaos.

I have called this entire trip Sepanjang Jalan Kenangan as a tribute to an Indonesian classic, my attempt to a summary in the travelogue. More pages, visit:
