When I went to Cuba for the first time in 1995, I would have never thought that later in my life I would end up living in Miami, the city with the biggest Cuban exile community lives, 90 miles away from the island and fiercely opposed to the Cuban communist regime.
11 years later, when it seems that Fidel Castro is coming to his end, I went back to Cuba, and, honestly, not much has changed. I am not sure if that is a good thing or not...anyways, Havana continues to be one of the most fascinating cities in the world, charming, hot, steamy, and run-down with so many colonial buildings that you will never get tired of roaming the city. The absence of traffic and pollution, and chains like MacDonalds or Starbucks makes Havana (and Cuba) a very unique place in the world, a living museum of sorts, almost suspended in time.
The Cubans are some of the friendliest, outgoing and fun people that you will ever meet. There is music everywhere, salsa, son, and even reggaeton has made its way to the isolated island. Que Bola!?! |
