I have been to Montevideo a couple of times and I really like this city. It reminds me of growing up in the Seventies (and I mean this with a certain melancholic nostalgia and not with sarcasm). It is a city that doen't seem to have developped a lot over the last 30 years, where everything seems to be a bit stuck in time. The buildings need a bit of renovation, the wide avenues and streets also. The men wear their hair a bit too long, and the women are friendly and pretty. You see quite a number of older people since most of the younger Uruguayans have left due the financial crisis of 2002.
Overall it is a very pleasant and charming city, with plenty of things to visit, a bit more provincial than Buenos Aires on the other side of the Rio Plata, but also less hectic where people have time to sit down on a parkbench and talk. |
