Laundos a small town about 8 Km east of Povoa de varzim. This is where my wife Silvia is from. It's a really nice town with a high hill in the centre of the town, On top of this hill there are 5 windmills of white colour, a church, a 4 star hotel, a viewing pad, beautiful gardens, a monument dedicated to immigrants and a huge cross. There are 2 ways up this hill, the road that goes around the hill to the top, and the stairway that starts at the bottom, behind the one of the town churchs.

The hotel you cannot see it from the top because it is hanging of the side of the hill facing west, that was a good idea, as it would off spoil the natural scenery of the windmills and church. But you can get an excellent view from the base of the hill on your way up. The windmills are no longer running but my wife says her mother remembered her father and grandfather who owned one of the mills, going up every day to grind the wheat.

One of the five windmills is a summer house (the bigger one), the 2nd biggest is a cafe and the other 3 are as original as they can get. Sadly you cannot go in them as they are sealed. (Except for the cafe one)

A few years ago a very wealthy man from Brazil came to his hometown a few km from Laundos (Agucadoura) with an offer, He asked if he could build a community centre for the town with many services to help the people and recreational facilities. All he wanted in return was if his name could be on the community centre, they said no, so very sadly he came toLlaundos with another offer, they said yes, so he took 100.000 contos that is about 1,200000.00 Canadian of his own money and he cleared the trees and bushes on both side of the staircase and planted a beautiful garden the whole length of the stairway, he also marbleized the whole stairway right to the top, and he then made a beautiful viewing platform of marble at the top facing west to Povoa de Varzim and the Atlantic Ocean. That by the way you can see from there, a beautiful view specially at sunrise and sunset.

He then had made a monument to the emigrants that shows a man his wife with a baby in her arms and three children with their belongings leaving for a better life. I guess that reflects his life, has the small baby in his mothers arms is him, when his parents left for Brazil for a better life, and I guess all emigrants like me who left Portugal to come to Canada for a better life and specially this town who 50 %, if not more, are emigrants or were at some point in time. So that was a very nice thing that he did for this town and Laundos thanks him . His name is Manuel Moreira Giesteira. So thank you for visiting and take a look at my tips pictures
