Amman (biblical Rabbah Ammon; ancient Philadelphia), city in northern Jordan, capital of Jordan and Amman Governorate. It is about 40 km (about 25 mi) northeast of the Dead Sea. Amman is the commercial, industrial, and administrative center of Jordan. Industries include the manufacture of textiles, tobacco products, dry batteries, leather products, tiles, and cement and the processing of flour and other food products. |
