my city......

I was born and raised. Although most people would disagree... with this.... to me its the best place on planet earth....Mumbai formerly called Bombay is the most modern and cosmopolitain city in India.Ancient yet modern, fabulously rich yet achingly poor. The city of Bombay originally consisted of seven islands, namely Colaba, Mazagaon, Old Woman's Island, Wadala, Mahim, Parel, and Matunga-Sion. This group of islands, which have since been joined together by a series of reclamations, formed part of the kingdom of Ashoka, the famous Emperor of India. Mumbai is the capital of the State of Maharashtra

During the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Mumbai (Bombay) was a center of both Indian nationalist and regional political activity. In 1885 the first session of the Indian National Congress (a focus of both pro-Indian and anti-British sentiment until independence) was held in the city, where subsequently, at its 1942 session, the Congress passed the "Quit India" resolution, which demanded complete independence for India.

From 1956 until 1960 Mumbai (Bombay)was the scene of intense protests against the two-language (Marathi-Gujarati) makeup of Bombay State, a legacy of British imperialism, which led to the State's partition into the modern States of Gujarat and Maharashtra.

Mumbai has lived upto the reputation for which it was established. It is a city built by the residents of the city. Mumbai is more than a cosmopolitan city and a city made of sky rise buildings. It is a city which never sleeps, its streets are never empty. The factories and mills operate day and night to meet the growing demands, the efforts of every individual in the city has made Mumbai the commercial capital of India. The marvelous natural port of Mumbai is fit for handling an ever expanding world trade. The city situated on the edge of Arabian sea has some thing or other to offer to everybody but one has to struggle to achieve that and one who is left behind perishes in the race of Mumbai. For decades the city has attracted migrants who have come here to earn bread, many failed and those who survived were absorbed in the pace of Mumbai.

City That Never Sleeps

he City That Never Sleeps - Mumbai
Mumbai never sleeps. No matter what time of night you venture out, there are bound to be other's going about some business or other. The city has always led the nightlife scene in India and there are bars and clubs to suit every taste; jazz dens compete with Salsa, Tabla dance fusions and Funk.

Mumbai 's alternative but decidedly yuppie crowd meets at the Ghetto Bar before heading down to the gay, glitzy or groovy clubs around Colaba and Juhu.

Good insight on Mumbai. I read your "facts" in album ( re India)- yes- not many people realise that India has contributed so much to what we all take for granted.-they fear because of ignorance.
