Cuba is special. Who just visits Cuba for tanning and swimming is definitely missing one of the most interesting, deep-minded and friendly people on this planet. A lot of this fascination goes out from the fact, that Fidel Castro is trying to lock his people up from the rest of the world as much as possible. Freedom to travel and meet other people is one of the most important things to have in life, so I really don?t want to switch with the Cubans. But every negative has its positive side, too, so I believe this state of being locked up made people so curios for knowledge and other people that the Cuba traveller will have a unique experience.
For the future of the Cubans I hope they manage to keep the goods of their society also in times of change, so that one day freedom can be enjoyed in a different way than in neighbouring Dominican Republic or Haiti. So if you still want to get this unique experience for sure ? travel now and don?t wait any longer. I am sure as soon as Castro is gone the US government can?t keep out any longer from this beautiful part of the earth, and we all know what this means?.
But it?s not ONLY the people and the system that shape the Cuba experience, it?s also the hot climate, hot music and hot dances. Not to forget beautiful beaches, landscapes and cities. As cars and industry are rare, the nature is still unspoilt in many areas. If you are a gourmet, you will have a hard time, but if you love rum and cigars, you are in paradise.
Whatever it is for you, paradise or hell, it is unique and I would recommend all patient and curious people to go and travel overland.
As we only had 2.5 weeks to drive around you will find most highlights of the island on my Cuba site, so I hope you get a good overview here. Two of the highlights of the highlights I had to take out, though, and have extra pages for them:
Havana
Trinidad
- Pros:One of the last socialist countries to visit, great people, almost no crime, landscape, beaches, flair, salsa, rum + cigars
- Cons:Being approached from strangers all the time, seeing people suffering from the system
- In a nutshell:Unique
