As a Peace Corps Volunteer in Cameroon I saw large parts of the country and experienced a wide variety of sights and events. I lived in Kumba, a large town in the Southwest Province, where I taught A-Level physics and geology in the government bilingual high school.
Cameroon has tremendous potential for tourists. Mount Cameroon is an active volcano that can be climbed by amateurs, the beaches are spectacular, you can hike through some of the oldest rainforest on the continent, experience the diversity of cultures, religions, and languages, and even see a few elephants and lions. And the food is fantastic!
Unfortunately, travel in Cameroon is anything but easy. The roads are terrible, the police constantly harass, public transportation is infrequent and unreliable, and speaking French is pretty much a requirement. But the people are very friendly and open to foreigners, so a little perseverance can overcome most obstacles.
I haven't been back to Cameroon since returning to the States in 2001, but the experience of the country stays with me every day.
