One of the highlights of the Bodensee

The Bodensee (Lake Constance in English) has two famous islands, the "flower island" Mainau, most of it a great park in the Western part, and Lindau, a charming town in the East. The airview picture (borrowed from the official Lindau website) shows perfectly the unique situation of this little city. It is a small city with about 24000 inhabitants, 3500 of them living on the island which is connected by a road and a railway bridge with the short Bavarian shore of the Bodensee.

Lindau has a long history, was "Freie Reichsstadt" and of course well fortified (some parts of it still exist) and is now Bavaria`s share of the Lake Constance between Bundesland Baden -Wuerttemberg and the Austrian Bay of Bregenz in Vorarlberg with the great background of the Swiss Alps above the opposite shore.

A real harbour in Bavaria!

Lindau has the only thing in the whole Bavaria which can be called a harbour (apart of its harbours along rivers like the Danube, of course) - a harbour which offers a shelter against storms (not so infrequent at this lake) and two real lighthouses!

Needless to say that Lindau is one of the main touristic destinations along this great lake.
