Charming Styrian Capital

Mediterranean and Eastern touch in Austria

The Uhrturm (Clock Tower) on Schlossberg
I was at least once in each one of all the eight other states of Austria before I succeeded to come for the first time to Styria. No wonder, it is a bit far from my temporary residence in Tirol. But I heard before already quite a lot about it - not only from Lothar who worked for a while in Graz and liked it very much. So I was already eager to see and experience it all myself.

My first contact with Graz was a nice surprise. I arrived in the best time of this city, in the early autumn (this year it was more felt being a late summer). The city is not as far in the East as Vienna and not as far in the South as Klagenfurt but it feels in a pleasant way more Southern than the Southern Carinthia and even slightly more "Eastern" than Vienna. It is also felt more "Italianità" here than in Innsbruck which is so much closer to Italy. It is a special way of a more relaxed and easy going attitude, an atmospere which is clearly "South of the Alps" - and close to Pannonia.

It is said - and you can almost feel it: "In Graz gehen die Uhren anders" ("in Graz the clocks go an other way"). This is not only valid for the clock at the Uhrturm which confuses every first time visitor, simply because here the long hand shows the hours and the short one the minutes - which seems quite logical because hours are longer than minutes....
