Ringstrasse: Take a tram ride around the "Ring"

  • The Ringstrasse was started in the middle of the 19th century when the inner fortifications around the heart of the city were removed. This wide and mostly tree lined boulevard runs through that what can be called World's most important ensemble of Historism. The various parts of the Ringstrasse have different names even including the full academic degrees of the historical persons which makes US students to write letters to the University's admission department starting with "Dear Dr. Karl Renner Ring..." Along the Ring you can find really impressive fakes of all European styles from Greek Temple (Parliament) via Gothic Cathedral (Rathaus and Votivkirche) to Renaissance (University) and Baroque, all built at the same time and often by the same architects.
The both tram lines 1 and 2 run all around the Ring (which is closed by the Kai along the Donaukanal) and you have the choice to do the tour clockwise or counterclockwise and can excellently watch all through the windows of the tram. Highly recommendable!

    Stephansdom: Vienna's and Austria's church Nr. 1

  • It is one of the great European gothic cathedrals, as most of them a work of centuries and most of it was - other than on many other great gothic cathedrals - really completed in the Middle Ages. The most important master in the construction was the same Peter Parler who was the most important one under the creation of St. Viths Cathedral in Prague..

St Stephan was founded already under the Romanic period and one can see quite something originating from this time and it was nice that there was not changed too much under the baroque period - which was for some churches in Ausrtria desastrous (Salzburg!).

  • One of the most precious treasures n the cathedral is the marvellous late gothic pulpit, a masterpiece in stone carving done by Anton Pilgram. You can see him in the lower right, looking and listening for the public's opinion about his work...

  • The Habsburg emperors had two residences in Vienna - the Hofburg in the city and Schoenbrunn. While Schoenbrunn gives the inmpression of being built almost completely under the baroque period the Hofburg is a work of many centuries. This huge complex hosts today not only the seat of the Austrian president but also the National Library, a number of museums, the treasury, the Spanish Riding School etc.

  • Much of the Hofburg are museums and just opposite the Hofburg over the Ringstrasse there are the both huge "twins" Kunsthistorisches Museum and Naturhistorisches Museum and at the other side of these museums is the brand new Museumsquartier, the former palace of the Vienna Fair which is now perfectly adapted to host a big number of various museums. One could spend quite a number of weeks in this area from Hofburg to Museumsquartier visiting every day an other museum.

    Schönbrunn: Schönbrunn, of course

  • Schönbrunn is of understandable reasons one of the most popular sights of Vienna and all Austria. Schönbrunn - situated quite in the middle of today's Vienna - is a separate destination in the VT database, therefore I have built a Schönbrunn page, too.
For a complete impression of Schönbrunn even a full day is not enough. I would recommend to reserve one day for the palace and the park including the Palmenhaus and a second day for the zoo, the oldest one in the world (founded 1752) and after the recent renovation one of the best zoos in the world..

Address: the summer-residence of the emperor
Directions: south-west from the centre of the city, best reached by the Subway line U4 (the "green" line). For the palace and the park the appropriate station is "Schönbrunn", fo rthe zoo the station "Hietzing" is closer

Vienna is definitely on my must-see list. My friend went a few years ago and raved about it. Great pictures, great tips.

Du hast schon viel gesehen von Wien, aber beim Demel warst Du noch nicht. Dort gibt es sogar eine Anna-Torte (schmeckt auch super !)
