  • Vienna is quite a good place for nice but often quite heavy food. As former Imperial capital Vienna integrated a lot of different influences into its kitchen - as did much of today’s Austria, too. The dominating influence is obviously Czech but the famous Wiener Schnitzel originally comes from Milano, the Gulyas (here written “Gulasch”) is Hungarian but called Pörkölt there while in Vienna the Gulaschsuppe comes closest to the original Hungarian Gulyas. The world famous pastries show many Czech, Hungarian and even Turkish traces. The only neighbouring kitchen which never had any influence in Vienna is the German – no wonder.

A great place to buy and to a certain extent to taste food is the Naschmarkt with its rather “exotic” atmosphere

The art of making delicious icecream came to Vienna from Italian regions of the old Austria, of course, mostly from the Zoldano region in the Dolomites. Still today one of the both most famous icecream outlets, the one on Schwedenplatz, is run since five or six generations by the same Italian family while the biggest player, Tichy, has a name of clear Czech origin. And the icecream at these both places is really great, many, even Italians, call it the best icecream in Europe. And I do not want to object. On the contrary – as an icecream lover I had a great time here.

  • Vienna - a delicious cone from Schwedenplatz

This is one of the great icecream outlets

It was founded about 120 years ago by the Italian family Molin-Pradel coming from the Zoldano region in the Dolomites.

Here are only relatively few tables to eat a great cup of icecream but most people just buy a cone and eat it outside an often sit down at the benches outside. Open only under the warm season about from April to beginning October

    ..

Favorite Dish: There are innumerable sorts of icecreams (about 25 throughout the season, about 8 to 10 changing every day, in total over the season more than 80).

If that is not enough - or just to test the big competitor - btw. globetrott's favourite in (the Vienna district) Favoriten - you can just go down to the Underground, take U1 and go to Reumannplatz, see the next tip.

For more details check their website (in German and Italian)

  • Restaurant Name: Tichy Eissalon

Tichy is something like icecream lover's heaven. Quite a big fraction of the crowd coming out from the Underground station Reumannplatz direct their steps to the right to Tichy's Eissalon, maybe one of the largest icecream palaces in Europe. The choice and the quality of the cups at the many, many tables and the cones in the street outlet is simply gorgeous.

Unfortunately the whole thing is open only under the warm season. Other than we in Russia (we enjoy icecream also under the coldest days of our rather cool winter) the Viennese seem to eat their wonderful icecream only from April to beginning October. I do not know what will be done with the milk of the about 50 cows. which they produce exclusively for Tichy's icecream under the cooler season...

Favorite Dish: It is difficult to name my specific favourite, I like all what they have ;-). But maybe the Tichy specialities which are not available elsewhere, except a few outlets in the wider surroundings of Vienna as for example the Eismarillenknoedel.

Grinzing & Heurigen: Dont miss to visit a „Heurigen”

  • Restaurant Name: Grinzing & Heurigen

“Heuriger” is a famous instiution in all Austrian wine growing areas. A law - more than a quarter of a millenium old - allows Austrian producers of wine to sell their own wine and other products grown and prepared by themselves at their places subjected only to very low taxes. Because the number of days to do so is in some way limited they mark with a bunch of branches they hang over the entrance that the “Heurige” is open. Therefore it is in Styria also called “Buschenschank” (“Buschen” is a bunch of branches).

How to find a good “Heurigen”? Avoid all places to which tourists are transported by bus (mostly in Grinzing). But nice Heurige can be found in many outer districts of Vienna, almost all comfortably reached by public transport (may be quite important for the way back;-)). Authentic inexpensive “off the beaten path” places are at the left side of the Danube in Stammersdorf and Strebersdorf. And a good idea is always to ask your Viennese friends about their favourite places.
In good weather you can enjoy the wine and the snacks often in very romantic gardens.

The Viennese usually visit frequently the Heurigen, but for rather short stays. The best time for the Heurigen is late afternoon to early evening.

Favorite Dish: Heuriger is the name of the youngest wine - from 11.November onwards the wine of the same year. But already in September, soon after the first grapes are harvested, it is possible to enjoy the “Sturm”, the only partially fermented intermediate product on its way to wine still containing quite some grape sugar which is not yet fully transformed to alcohol. It is quite a “dangerous” stuff, it tastes great but you are easily persuaded to drink much more than you should….

The home made food which you mostly choose from a buffet is often very delicious.
