Some facts about my homeland...

The square of republic Karelia is about 1% of the whole territory of Russia and about 0,5 % of all population. From North to West is 660 km and from West to East-424 km. The climate of Karelia is influenced mostly by the Arctic and tne Northern Atlantic. The humidity is quite high, about 80%. Average summer temperature is +13C and winter temperature is -13C. But the difference can be -35 C - +35 C. Really! (;)
Forests take 49, 1% of the whole territory of Karelia, mushes -20% and water 25, 7 %. There are 61 thousand lakes and 27 thousand rivers in Karelia. So in average for every family consisting of three generations there is one lake! The deepest place is in the Ladoga lake( the largest in Europe), it is 260 m. The longest river is Kem river (358km) The most precious tree is Karelian birch, famous for its beauty. The highest point in Karelia is the mountain Nuorunen (576m)

The population is about 757 thousand people. Among them Russians (73, 6 %), Karelians, Vepsy, Finnish (13, 1 %), Belorussians and Ukranians (10, 6 %)

Among Russian republics Karelia takes the fifth place on its territory. The territory of republic is approximately equal to 3 Georgias; Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia together; 2 Azerbaidzhans; 6 Armenias; 6 Moldovas.
In Europe and Asia 2 Austrias; 6 Belgiums.
Yeah, it is just to imagine the real size...
