"The (not so wild) West of Austria" Bundesland Vorarlberg by Anjutka

Bundesland Vorarlberg Travel Guide: 237 reviews and 642 photos

Vorarlberg is the westernmost state of Austria, clearly separated from the rest of the country by the Arlberg, a 1800 m high and rather difficult pass. And it is as far away from Vienna as the Ukraine... When the railway tunnel was built in 19th century to better connect Vorarlberg to the rest of Austria people used to say that one should not connect by a hole what God did separate by a mountain. And Vorarlberg is really very diffferent from all the other Austria – the people, their way of life and last and not least their language. The dialect spoken here is similar to the Swiss German dialects but without their charming melody. When Voralberg locals are speaking in the Austrian TV it happens sometimes that it is sub-titled in normal written German...

The very hard working population – in their way of life and attitudes much closer to the puritanic Swiss ans Schwabs than to the other Austrians - is living mainly in the Rhine valley along the Swiss border and in the Ill valley between Bludenz and Feldkirch (their dialect word for the verb „to work“ is „schaffe“ - in English „to create“, showing the extremely positive appreciation work has in their life – the corresponding dialect word in neighbouring Tirol is „buckeln“, expressing the heavy load of work on the back...) . All the other area are less inhabitated nice mountains as the Silvretta (shared with Tirrol and Switzerland – see my page), the Rätikon (shared with Switzerland and Liechtenstein), the Ferwall, the Lechtal and Allgäu Alps and the Bregenzerwald.

I hope to add more to this page in spring.
