Zipolite Mazunte San Agustinillo Puerto Angel

by CyrilHH - last update: Feb 24, 2006

The Oaxaca coast (Costa Chica) - a paradise!

Sunset in San Agustinillo
This page was intended to be really more about San Agustinillo, Zipolite and Mazunte and less about Puerto Angel (which is the closest town that the VT system recognized).

Anyhow, I ended up adding some stuff about Puerto Angel as well which is actually a pleasant port town in the same area, though the reasons that will lead most of everyone to this stretch of the Pacific coast lie in the (formerly) sleepy but increasingly developed smaller villages which have turned into backpackers' and hippies' havens (and heavens, I guess).

Zipolite is the most bohemian among the bunch sporting the longest and wildest beach and probably more dope than the others. Zipo accomodates the most varied clientele of laid back types: trendy people from Mexico City , nudists, esoterics, hippies, dope smokers, mid-aged gays from Mexico and abroad, u find them all here. Mazunte boast a little bit of eco-conscience with its turtle sanctuary and museum (and Playa Ventanilla nearby as a turtle nesting area) and also a local women's project producing and selling (quite overpriced) pleasant nature cosmetics. The visitors here seem a bit younger and even a bit more backpacker style than in Zipolite. San Agustinillo, located between the two, is the sleepiest village of them all, the beach is emptier but wilder than Mazunte's but calmer (and emptier) than Zipolite's. The village seems to host a somewhat older crowd, lots of more mature Gringos who seem to come down by car and spend longer periods of time there.

Make your pick. You cant go wrong and you can always move a few kilometres down the coastal road.

Pros:"No package tourism, waves of all degrees, palm thatched huts, great sea and cool vibes"
Cons:"11 + hours by car from Mexico City (unless you catch a flight to Puerto Escondido)"
In A Nutshell:"Muy charolastra! Actually, one shouldn't advertise it here..."

Hi, Do you even really know what does Naco means? cause if u donīt, i think you better think twice before using it or adding it into one of your comments. Just donīt come to Mexico and offend our people just for fun!One word Respect!

It's probably not necessary to create a new specific VT place for Zipolite and all these small places... It has already so much success in real ! and it's the perfect spot for sunset pic's :-)
