Swanage - a world of its own

Some friends retired and moved to Swanage having had a holiday home here for years. I have visited several times now and have come to like the place very much.
The surrounding scenery is lovely - the coastline is breathtaking and the places to visit are so interesting.
I think it's the nightlife that I like - the town is well-served by pubs and restaurants and the pubs often have live music on with free admission.
Twice-a-Year in March and October, Swanage hosts the Swanage Blues festival with pubs putting-on live music virtually the whole day and evening.

Walks along the coast - 1 - Arne nature reserve

Lovely setting with views across Poole Harbour, and birds, deer, and flora.

ST Aldhelm's Chapel

Park the car at Worth Matravers car park and walk approx. 2 miles to the cliff edge. This tiny chapel is still in use but seems so remote and isolated!
The views from the cliff tops are breathtaking.
Then, before driving away, visit the famous Square and Compass for a pint and a Cornish Pasty!

Hi John, Happy Birthday to you! Can't resist seeing your Swanage page on this occasion. I was in the area in May & have many happy memories of Dorset. Bought paintings at The Creative Gallery in Wareham (a favourite town) of Old Harry Rocks and of the Stair Hole near Lulworth Cove. Walking the Coast Path at Lulworth Cove and Durdle Door was a joy! I can understand your returning to this area time after time! Happy travels and best wishes! lou in Montréal

Nice tips on Swanage, JD - not a town that I've been to in ages, but I recall liking it very much. That whole Dorset coast is exquisite and underrated by foreign tourists in particular, and I am particularly partial to the idea of a pasty washed down by some local cider after a walk on the clifftops!
But now that you've told 1 million VT members about its delights, don't you think you've rather shot yourself in the foot? ;)

that tip to take a walk along the cliffs edge to the chapel sounds well worth returning for! we had birthday cruises over from Bournemouth one year which was nice - but soime walking sounds good!
