Beirut

downtown Beirut
I’ve travelled and stayed in Beirut twice in the past year. The first time was in autumn and we spent most of our time in the city. The second, we explored further afield.
Going back, it felt like I was coming back to visit a group of old friends - ABC Mall, Element nightclub, the cobbled streets of Downtown - you get my drift.
But there was a difference, since Hariri's assassination, and the ones which followed, the military presence and security has increased. It's sad to see such a beautiful, well-located city on the brink of turmoil yet again.

Beirut is way underrated as a tourist destination. There is great shopping, scenery, history and nightlife all rolled into one crazy developing city.
It's close to:-
Byblos (ancient Phoenician city),
Tripoli (industrial city, second largest in Lebanon),
Mount Lebanon (alpine splendour Lebanese style),
Beit Ed Dine (medieval castle Lebanese style)
........ I could go on and on.

People wine, dine and 69 downtown until well past midnight. You can sit awhile at American chains like TGIs, Lebanese icons like Casper & Gambinis and ethnic restaurants like La Posta (have to try their grilled whole baby calamari).
From the outside looking in, it seems like everyone lives well - eats and drinks and plays, and tries to find time to fit work in somehow. Families sit outside on balconies watching the world go past, with backgammon and political debates intermingling with System of a Down (made in Lebanon you'll be told proudly and Lebanese pop music.

Pros:"relaxed lifestyle in beautiful surroundings"
Cons:"politically unstable at the moment, while the odd bomb thrown in"
In A Nutshell:"Imagine driving for 2 hours and being at the bottom of the chairlift, and then when you get home, pop down to the beach for a dip to relax après-ski muscles."
