The ancient city of Chiang Mai, founded in 1296, was once the capital of the Lanna Kingdom, which ruled present-day northern Thailand from the 13th - 16th century. The city flourished as a major religious, cultural and trading centre until the Burmese invaded in 1556. Today, Chiang Mai is the second largest city in Thailand, with a flourishing tourism industry. It boasts magnificent old temples, exotic culture, great crafts markets, and excellent cuisine.
Chiang Mai is also a gateway to the infamous Golden Triangle region, where the borders of Thailand, Laos and Myanmar (Burma) meet. The region is home to numerous ethnic hilltribes who still live in remote villages and preserve their own unique religion, language, art, crafts, and dress. In addition, the natural beauty of the area lends itself to some amazing trekking opportunities.
Please visit the Chiang Mai page on my personal website to see many more high quality photos from this destination.
- Pros:History, hilltribes, shopping, cuisine, trekking.
- Cons:Overtouristed? Possibly...
- In a nutshell:One of the cultural highlights of Southeast Asia.

A reallly interesting trip you had in Northern Thailand. Thanks for the tips and nice photos.
My experience with the village headmen, Thai Government and NGO's is never give money directly to someone. because villagers are very communial so if you give something to one you must give to all if not jealousy occures which could lead to big problems.
