Flying over Phuket airport
Our hotel booking did not include airport transfers. It was less than a 30 minute drive to the hotel, and they wanted an additional 700Baht (~17.50USD) one-way for the transfers, so we decided to just get something cheaper at the airport. We booked a ride from a stand in the airport arrival hall for 450Baht (~11.25USD), which is better but still expensive, especially knowing how cheap transporation is elsewhere in Thailand.
The night before leaving the hotel, we tried to arrange similar transporation back to the airport, but we could not reach anyone at the number given to us on a card from the first driver. We then tried the local taxi company, but the woman only spoke Thai and hung up on me. The resort was rather secluded, and we had to leave super early in the morning, meaning it would be near impossible to flag down anything on the street. In the end, we reluctantly booked the 700Baht hotel shuttle to the airport.
The moral of the story is either a) negotiate free transfers in your hotel booking or b) arrange cheap transportation in advance. While the rest of Thailand may be dirt cheap, Phuket is definitely priced for wealthy foreigners.
