Manchester Manchester is my home town; it's the one I compare everywhere else to. I'm not saying it's the best city in the world. I'm not saying there aren't other places I'd like to live. But there's a feeling I get from Manchester that I've never found anywhere else. It's a brash, cocksure city with little fear, lots of pride, and a talent for invention. I wish I were a little more like it; instead, I get to love it. |
| The morning after the bomb before |
| | Greetings from the IRA Father's Day, Saturday 15 June 1996. A series of coded warnings were issued that morning to newspapers, radio stations, and at least one Manchester hospital. An hour later, a 3,000lb bomb exploded in the city centre. Somehow, nobody was killed; 206 people were injured, mostly by falling glass and debris. A large area around the bomb site was massively damaged; the rebuilding is still in progress. The Corn Exchange's glass dome roof was shattered. Marks & Spencer's shopping centre was completely gutted. The Arndale Centre was stripped of many of its trademark ugly urinal-style tiles and a large portion of it rendered unusable. |
