Torre del Clavero

This tower was built at the end of the 15th century and was a defense tower. It was part of the house of Francisco de Sotomayor. The Head Clavero of the Order of Alcántara, he was the one who carried the nails of Christ’s cross in processions.

Convento de San Esteban

The construction of this building started in 1524 and was finished in 1610. The first architect was Juan de Avila, later followed by famous architects like Rodrigo Gil de Hontanon and Diego de Salcedo. The building is a good example of the Plateresque style.

This is a good example of an urban Renaissance palace. It was built in the 16th century. The architect was Rodrigo Gil de Hontanon. He was influenced by what he saw in Italy and redesigned it to a Spanish style.

This convent was built in the beginning of the XVI century. This Gothic building has undrgone some changes throughout the centuries it exists. In the 18th century the entrance doors were replaced by Baroque ones. The statue of the founder of the convent archbishop Alonso de Fonseca can be seen inside.

Construction of the old cathedral began in 1140 and was finished in 1200. The most important architects were Juan Franco and Pierre d´Aix. Located under the Tower of the Bells is the chapel of Saint Martin. It was founded around 1262 by Bishop Pedro Pérez.

The University of Salamanca was founded by King Alfonse IX in 1218. In 1254 Pope Alexander IV made it an official university. The facade was built in the first half of the 16th century and is one of the most important Spanish Plateresque facades.
