  • Hotel Prima Lepic's rates run from a 110 euros for a single up to 210 euros for a quad. Weekend rates increase to 110 euros for a single up to 250 euros for a quad. It's about a 4-minute walk to metro Blanche:
    http://www.hotel-prima-lepic.com/

There's also Avenir Hotel Montmartre which was featured in one of the Antoine Doinel films (directed by Truffaut). Rates are 55 euros for a single up to 104 euros for a quad. It's right across the street from Anvers metro:
    http://www.hotel-avenir.com/

I stayed at a hostel near Anvers metro called Le Village Hostel. Rates run from 24 euros for a dorm (6-bed room) to 30 euros for a triple.
    http://www.villagehostel.fr/hotel2.htm
    http://members.virtualtourist.com/m/tp/1ab3e8/

Hotel Regyn's Montmartre is located on Place des Abbesses, where you'll find metro Abbesses. Rates run from 60/91 euros for a standard 2-person room to 80/115 euros for a room with either a double or 2 singles:
    http://hotels.parishotels.com/hotel-direct.php?hotel=66&lang=en

Timhotel Montmartre sits on the beautiful, leafy Place Emile Goudeau (next door to the historic artist haunt Bateau Lavoir) and is a 2-minute walk to Abbesses metro station. It was featured in Eric Rohmer's Rendezvous in Paris:
    http://www.timhotel.com/hotels/us/montmartre.html

Unique Qualities: These are all hotels that are within an easy 5-minute walk to a metro station (and a few have film connections!).

Hôtel Henri IV: Shabby Chic Budget in Central Paris

  • Dirt cheap & super central; bare bones accommodations.
    .
This is a great little find for central Paris - and I mean extremely central. Located on the Île de la Cité (same island as Notre Dame & Ste-Chapelle) it is in the exact center of Paris and pretty much you can walk everywhere from here. If you want central, cheap & clean this is your place! Oh, and a simple café-et-croissant breakfast is included in the price, too. However, this hotel is very popular so you'll either have to make reservations several months in advance, or luck out like me and walk in to score a room.

The staff is super nice. Mr. Connolly called here one night to talk to me; I was out so he chit-chatted on the phone with the manager for 20 minutes. The guy rambled on about how nice I was and that they'd make sure I was kept safe in Paris (isn't that sweet?!?). Also, after I'd checked out, I discovered I'd left my favorite scarf behind and walked back to the hotel. Sure enough, the cleaning staff had found it and tucked it away for me, smiling shyly at me as she handed it over.

Several Métro stations, 1 on the island, 2 on the right bank just across the bridge and 2 on the left bank just across the bridge - within walking distance of most of your tourist sites such as Notre Dame, Ste-Chapelle, the Île St-Louis, the Marais, the Latin Quarter, Shakespeare & Co., the Seine and the Bateaux Mouche, the Louvre, Place de la Concorde, Les Halles (excluding the Eiffel Tower, Arc de Triomphe, Sacre Coeur and the Champs Elysées ALTHOUGH the Métro provides quick & easy access to these).

Unfortunately, they do not have a website (that's why it is so inexpensive) nor e-mail but you may call or fax. They also have no elevator but some rooms provide incredible views overlooking the tranquil Place Dauphine and of Notre Dame's towers in the distance.

    http://www.pbase.com/beatchick/image/58343254 (3 photos total - night-time views)

Unique Qualities: 32 euro per night for a single on the 6th floor with superb views. Some singles are as cheap as 28 euro. I believe they are cash only.

This is as cheap as it gets without going to a youth hostel. Some rooms have showers but for most the showers are down the hall or even on another floor (although the rooms themselves have sinks). The rooms are basic with simple furnishings but extremely clean. The building itself is very old, at least 400 years so the stairs are creaking, the doors are old, it may even be hard to use the key but that's part of the charm of staying in such an historic building (in fact, King Henri IV once held his printing press here in the late 1600s).

You might be interested to know that Madonna keeps an apartment on the same square as the hotel.

  • Grand Hotel Jeanne d'Arc - 3 rue Jarente
5 minutes walk to the Place de Vosges

Loved my room, though it was QUITE small but charming with beamed ceiling, French windows, blue/green oriental carpet, coral bedspread/wallpaper, little desk, quaint light fixtures, & 6th floor ROOFTOP view!

At night I'd meander home along the northern street of Notre Dame, cross the bridge to the Ile St-Louis, then halfway down the rue St-Louis-en-l'Ile to cross the Pont Marie and eventually reach my little hotel in the Marais. I passed many couples & young groups of people along the way. The wonderful thing about this area is that I felt completely safe & comfortable as a single woman walking through it late at night. What immense freedom.

Another great thing is that it is 5 minutes from the Metro station St. Paul on the #1 line, so it's very convenient to everything. From that station, I easily found my way back to the hotel by walking along rue St-Antoine to the huge St. Louis-St. Paul church, just past it on the left is rue Caron which would take me right through the middle of the Place du Marche Ste-Catherine (a beautiful little square with restaurants lining it and tons of people hanging out - prime location for people watching) then around the corner to the Grand Hotel Jeanne d'Arc.

The Place du Marche St-Catherine, incidentally, was one of the locations used for the film The Bourne Identity. It flashes very briefly on the screen but I recognized it. The safehouse for Treadstone is above one of the restaurants on the east side of the square.

Unique Qualities: Stefan will make your lunch/dinner reservations & give you advice on French food specialties. To get into the good graces of the staff bear in mind they LOVE peanut butter eggs. :)

    BOULANGERIES/PATISSIERS
    Miss Manon - Patissier/Boulanger/Traiteur for breakfast-open 7am-10pm except Monday.
Boulangerie Paul - next to Miss Manon on r. Saint-Antoine 3 mins. from hotel (Directions: thru Pl. du Marche Ste- Catherine & r. Caron & across the street @ #87).

    CAFE
Cafe Tabac Jean Bart - for cigarettes, stamps, phone card, late-night cafe or frites & cidre!!

    FOOD MARKET
Just west of the patisseries is a Supermarche at #115, rue St-Antoine where you can buy your bottled water or drinkable yogurt.

    PLACE DU MARCHE STE-CATHERINE
At night I'd grab my CD player, sit on a bench in the square, smoke cigs, listen to Coldplay & people-watch ~ sheer heaven!

    VILLAGE ST-PAUL
If you walk down the rue Caron, cross rue St-Antoine & continue down rue St-Paul within a few minutes you'll reach the Village St-Paul, a quaint area set up as an antiques market.

  • Located in the 5th arrondissement in the historic Latin Quarter, Hotel les Degres de Notre Dame is an excellent hotel for families with children. The great thing is that it is located across the Seine with views of Notre Dame, plus prices are very reasonable.

The rooms are very charming. I had requested a single room w/ view of Notre Dame and they gave me one for about $86 (600₣ or 95? in 2001) that included free breakfast (served in room or in the restaurant below - stays open all night except for Sunday).

*Another room (#501) that is larger & recommended for honeymooning couples went for about $120/night in 2001. This one has the best view of Notre Dame.
    * Big room on the top floor known as the family room is now 190 euros. It holds 1 large double bed & 2 single beds.
    * They also have one room with double, sofa & full bathroom for 160 euros.
    * A regular double is 100 euros.
    * A single on the 1st floor is 70 euros.
    * Breakfast is still included in the price.

PLEASE SEE MY HOTEL ALBUMS (16 add'l photos):
Hotel les Degres de Notre Dame - March 2001
Hotel les Degres de Notre Dame-March 2001-Interior

Unique Qualities: Room 47: A lovely demi-view of Notre Dame thru tall, floor-to-ceiling tapestry-curtained double-glazed windows, beamed ceilings, glossy hardwood floors covered by an oriental rug, TV, hair drier, en-suite bathroom with bath & shower, even a desk. It had its own radiator/heater if you needed extra heat. Ahhh!

It is super clean and the hotel entrance is across from the picturesque Square Restif de la Bretonne which was featured in the 1995 version of Sabrina. Hotel is located down a side street from the quai de Montebello in a nice, very well-situated, centrally-located, safe area. It lies very close to the bateaux mouches (river boats), Notre Dame, Ste-Chapelle, Shakespeare & Co. and a great souvenirs shop around the corner on Quai de Montebello.

Plus it has a very inexpensive Algerian couscous-type restaurant, a couscouserie. I ate dinner there my third trip (April 2003) - 'twas wonderful, a couscous with merguez sausage. With aperitif & wine 16?. The superb free breakfast consists of freshly-squeezed orange juice, flaky fresh croissants with butter & jams, and hot, fresh French caf? served with a pitcher of hot milk. No better way to start your day.

  • I LOVE this hotel. It's my absolute favorite in Paris, hands down. I stayed there the first trip (March 2001), dined on couscous on the terrasse the 3rd trip (April 2003), dined and stayed in 2 different rooms this past trip (February 2006). They have the best croissants I've eaten yet in Paris and the coffee is divine, so's the fresh-squeezed oj. If you stay there, please tell Nicole Madame Mary Connolly said hello. She's great and her English is perfect, her sense of humor is very dry but you'll find her to be extremely helpful. Monsieur Tahir, while he doesn't speak a lick of English, is very kind and gracious - I somehow managed to have a 40-minute conversation with him despite my limited French.

Moviemakers must find the area charming as well since it made its way into the 1995 version of Sabrina (when she and her photographer friend are dining at a café - at one point in the background you see the hotel) and also in this year's The Devil Wears Prada. Andy (Anne Hathaway) is walking south on the rue du Haut Pavé toward the Square Restif de la Bretonne while you see the south rose window of Notre Dame looming in the background.

It's a different type of hotel, an auberge (hotel with restaurant although I've listed it as a B&B), unique and in a great area of Paris (so close to Notre Dame while veering away from the touristic haunts of the Latin Quarter - plus just down the street you'll find Place Maubert where they have bi-weekly food markets).

And of course, just down the street at 3, rue des Grands Degrés is a famous bistro (mentioned in Bistros of Paris by the Hamburgers) called Le Reminet. One of my best friends loves this resto.

Unique Qualities: Here are photos of room 501 from this past trip on pbase (click "next" at the right top of the page to see a total of 23 photos for the room and other parts of the hotel including the murals - Monsieur Tahir, the owner, is a big art lover):

Here are photos of the meal I had in the restaurant one night (4 photos total):

Here are photos I took of the area just outside of the hotel the first night this past trip.(total of 8 photos):

  • It's extremely affordable, ultra-clean, a little grandma hotel as my friend calls it because of the old-fashioned décor. The hotel is really nice, ultra-clean, room was small but charming. Bed was fairly comfortable and very cozy and toasty, with lots of blankets to keep you warm in bed. I was very satisfied in that respect.

The hotel was great except that during the transit strike I had trouble getting reliable info on the strikes. The only exception was Simon, the night clerk, and he was the bomb. He helped me find someone to share a taxi with back to the airport Sunday morning (my share was 26€, not too bad, about $38). Also, I didn't get most of my messages. Mr. Connolly & my friend, Michael, the tour guide, said they called for me a BUNCH of times but always was told I was out. And maybe I was but I was never told upon return that I'd had phone calls (except for from Simon).

Other problems I experienced included being charged for an extra breakfast & for shower tokens! Tokens are 2€ or 2.50€ for 5 minutes' worth of showering. Of course, I'm a French hotelier's worst nightmare as I'd easily want at least 20 minutes' worth so that'd be an 10€ shower! I just showered at the in-room sink. In their defense, though, Mme Claudine deducted the charges (after speaking to 4 people about this before gaining satisfaction).

I think all in all, I'd stay here again but never again during a transit strike!

Port-Royal Hotel is ultra-budget (41 euros/night for a single). The most expensive room is 89 euros. Breakfast is 5.50 euros but I don't think it's worth the price as it only consists of tartine (sliced baguette), butter, jam, and coffee. Too many excellent bakeries in the vicinity to bother with breakfast here.

    Photos: November 2007

Unique Qualities: They have A/C on the ground floor!!

Rue Mouffetard, one of the most famous and best of the street markets in Paris is just around the corner a few blocks. Walk north 2-3 blocks on avenue de Gobelins and you'll find yourself at the bottom of rue Mouffetard where Eglise St-Medard sits.

Man, there's EVERYTHING close by! If you wish to stay in a typical Parisian neighborhood with few tourists this would be the place!

It's in a great spot with:
    several bakeries
    grocery store across the street
at least 4 movie theaters within 5 mins walk including Cinéma Escurial across the street
several great little restaurants such as Le Languedoc & Au Petit Marguery
    cafés
banks (ATMs) in the immediate vicinity
dry cleaners and laundromat in the immediate area
a McDonald's just across from the hotel if that's your thing.

The métro is across the street, several bus lines are across another street, the RER is a 10 minute walk west on bd Port-Royal and also a taxi stand nearby.

Sadaharu Aoki's patissierie is 3 blocks west at 56, bd Port-Royal (corner of rue Flatters). It's one of the newer pastry shops in Paris garnering a great deal of buzz over his green tea (macha) madeleines.

There's a nice little bakery across the street that has excellent almond croissants. I tried their sugar doughnuts but they were a bit dry.

There's a nice brasserie across the street, L'Interlude, where I dined on the most fabulous dinner of boeuf bourguignon, haricots vert and carafe of wine.

  • I've never stayed at this hotel, but knowing how popular it is I decided to visit in April 2003 to look around and take photos. Some of the rooms are described as shabby, while others consider it shabby chic & charming. Everywhere I've read describes it as clean, some rooms having great views of Notre Dame & a budget find. Considering its location (on the Left Bank, in the heart of the Latin Quarter & directly across from Notre Dame) I consider this place to be a great deal. I also found the owner to be nice & helpful, especially since he so blithely handed me keys to see a room and didn't mind me taking photos.

This hotel has no website or e-mail so you'll have to call, fax or mail to reserve. This may explain why the prices are so cheap.

Here are some other websites you'll want to visit when making your determination to stay:

  • I've never stayed here but I've had friends stay here who've raved over it, plus it's an extremely historic hotel so if a sense of history surrounding you is what you seek then this would very well be the place for you! Apparently, though, the lower floored rooms leave much to be desired concerning what you get for the price. I've read of reports of mildew. However, on the higher levels this does not seem to be a problem.

However, it WAS here that he, John Jay & John Adams worked out details of the treaty with England; just a few steps down the street at #56 (indicated by plaque) these 3 eminent men signed the peace treaty with the British September 3, 1783.

In 1777, Franklin & his 2 grandsons lived at #52. His American compatriot, Thomas Jefferson, was also a guest at the d'Angleterre.

The original name of this hotel was Hôtel Jacob then changed in 1925 to Hôtel Jacob-et-d'Angleterre before settling on its current incarnation.

Moving forward we see that this was the first hotel where Hemingway & his bride Hadley (grandmother to Margo & Mariel) stayed (Dec 1921) before taking digs on rue Cardinal-Lemoine in the Quartier Latin.

Other illustrious writers/artists include Djuna Barnes, Sherwood Anderson (a favorite of Gertrude Stein - over whom she & Hemingway had a falling out), and Man Ray, the famous artist/photographer.

At #20, Natalie Barney held her famous literary salons. Patricia Wells' Paris apartment is located at #10. And on the corner of rue Jacob & rue Bonaparte you'll find the most divine macarons at Ladurée.

  • One street over from the Rue Cler in the 7th, sits the Hôtel Valadon, sister hotel to the Hôtel Latour-Maubourg. I stayed here April 2002 for 3 nights with my best friend, Kristin. We opted for fewer amenities on this trip but didn't sacrifice cleanliness or location.

It ran 85€ per night for a single (about $78 USD) so it was certainly within a small budget. For a room with double beds the rate was 95 euros/night. Breakfast is included; your basic oj, coffee, hot milk, baguette, croissant, butter & jams. Breakfast was okay and the juice wasn't fresh-squeezed which I’d gotten spoiled on my first trip to Paris at another hotel.

I thought the rooms were a little smallish but it did have cable TV. We got a laugh over the sink bowl that's not EMBEDDED into the countertop but rests on TOP of it! We thought the 2 young ladies at the front desk were very professional, not the least bit rude, but not as friendly as I’d liked; I was hoping to come in direct contact with the owners, Maria & Victor Orsenne, who are well-known for their graciousness & have a fine reputation for hospitality & who I'd been e-mailing with for several months, but alas that didn't occur. Unfortunately, although they own this hotel, they spend their time at the Latour-Maubourg.

The decor is "moderne" which was kinda cool but the carpet was black, which was a little disconcerting, as I like to put baby powder on my feet due to walking all day long and I was worried about getting powder on the carpet. That detracted from the relaxation I was hoping to experience.

Unique Qualities: The nice thing about the Valadon, besides the cleanliness & the price, is that it's around the corner from rue Cler. It's a nice neighborhood, not far from bustling places, but not too close to noise. You have a choice of feather duvet or comforter.

The hotel Quai Voltaire has undertaken some serious renovations. I have been there lately and it was very pleasant. Still a 2 star hotel but the view from the room is just unbelievable, the Louvre, Notre Dame, the Seine, Tuileries.
