Amsterdam is the city where I live. It's a great city with very friendly people and it is a pleasure to live here.
Amsterdam is the capital of the Netherlands and it has abt. 750.000 inhabitants and is the largest city in this country. Amsterdam is abt. 30 km from the sea and parts of the city are below the sea level (up to 6 mtr below the sea level and if there were no dykes, these parts were under the water. The city is a net of canals (total length of abt. 75 km) with almost 1.300 bridges. There are abt. 2.500 houseboats in the Amsterdam canals.
Around 1100 fishermen built first cottages at the mouth of the river Amstel. In the 13th century one built a dam on this river Amstel, so the present name Amsterdam (Amstel + dam) was born. In the 17th century, which was called 'the Golden Age' due to very good overseas (trade) business (VOC), money was earned like water. In that period there are built a.o. the three most important 'grachten' (canals): Herengracht, Keizersgracht en Prinsengracht. The Herengracht is one with the most majestic houses/mansions.
Today is Amsterdam a place which is visited by millions tourist yearly, where they enjoy the warmth of the Amsterdammers (people who live in Amsterdam) and all the beauty of the city (famous museums, flower markets, cozy pubs, picturesque architecture and places/spots etc.). |
