Moravian Karst (Moravsky Kras) is the most important karst area in the Czech Republic and belongs also to the most important karst areas in the central Europe. It consists of strongly karsted devon limestone (Devonian age – 350 mil. years old). There are more than 1000 caves found in this area of abt. 100 km2. Four of them are open for the public: - In Punkva caves, the visitor's foot walk is followed by a motorboat ride along the Punkva underground river. The ride includes the visit to the Masaryk Dome. There's also famous Macocha (= Stepmother) Abyss (138,7 metres deep) with opened bed of the underground Punkva river in the bottom. - The Katerinska caves (Catherine’s caves) which consists of huge caverns is known for its unique stalagmite formations of a bamboolike wood. - The outstanding feature of the Balcarka cave is the rich colour of the stalagmites and stalactites. - The Sloup-Sosuvka caves are well known for their complicate systems of corridors, abysses and domes. Part of the cave system is used as a therapy place for children with asthma diseases.
In 1956 the Moravian Karst was declared a protected landscape area. Traces of prehistoric humans have been found in the caves.
