"The Traveller in Me" ishi01's Profile
I guess there is such thing as having too much of a good thing - and getting exactly what I wished for.
I never thought I'd ever say this.
I travel too much!!
NOOOOOOOOO!!!!!
YESSSS!!!
And I feel travelled out!
I know what i said about travelling five years ago. Fast forward five years later, I find feeling quite tired of all the flying in and flying out of a city.
Right now have three airline tickets:
To Tehran, Muscat and Sukhothai. Except for Sukhothai I am not really looking forward to the other two. Don't get me wrong. I've been to Tehran and its a gorgeous city with gorgeous people. I've been told Muscat is gorgeous too. But I am simply not looking forward to it. I wish Sukhothai would happen sooner.
The difference between the Sukhothai and the other two is, the former is a vacation and the latter is for business.
My January 2010 calendar is filled to brim - I am scheduled to be in Bangkok, Jakarta, Brunei, Kota Kinabalu, Kertih and Singapore....
I know what I said about travelling for work and getting to see places. The lure of business travel doesn't seem to be that attractive anymore. Lord knows I do enough of it. I got a hotel loyalty card and I got elevated to gold club within months. I now have two frequent flyer memberships. I travel extensively enough to get free tickets out of the memberships.
I wonder if this is mid-life crisis...i hope it is, at least I know it will go away, eventually.
I don't want to be travelled out. I want to enjoy my travels again...
I am happiest when I have an air ticket in my hand and passport in my pocket and running after the plane to somewhere - never mind where.
And thankfully, my career takes me places. Places I could not have imagined going if not for my work - top of this list would have to be Sudan (I still hear people saying WHATT!!!!??), Myanmar and to a certain extend India.
As an asian, the fantasy trip has always been somewhere cooler than where we live and usually, Europe , the USA and Australia and Ocenia would be high on the list of 'things To do'.
If not for work, I would not have enjoyed the food in Kolkatta, feasted my eyes on gigantic gold plated domes of Shweedagon Pagoda in Myanmar and of course minggle with the really friendly locals in Sudan.
Canada, Egypt, Thailand, Indonesia etc were all exciting places for me - never dull if you know how to enjoy the journey.
With all the aforementioned destination sponsored by my employer, I utilised my own savings for trips within my own country and the south east asia region and the UK.
I still have long standing invite from aunty living in Australia and friend in New Zealand and of course Europe. More of Africa if work dictates it.
I hope i get to all these places soon. And looking at my plans I believe my passport will soon run out of pages and I'll be the world happiest person.
The travel bug started early in life - school trips (I'll get those pics soon). I remember going to places of interest such as Cameron Highlands to visit the tea plantation (it was an industry we learned in school), Port Dickson , Bukit Malawati in Kuala Selangor and Mimaland in Gombak for picnics. And my family were never home during school holidays - we always have a trip somewhere, even if to just 'balik kampung' or going back to gramps place in Johor.
I got bitten by the travel bug quite early in life as you an see.
Then I became an accountant! Dont ask why, i just did. Talk about doomed for life in work that confines one within the 4 walls of the office! I was going to die - i think i did too. For a good 4 years of my life when I had to practice my skills.
Then I moved on to more interesting work that utilised my skills with figures but got me out and about a little - project work. I started to live again. But the best part is, I learned another skill that started my travelling ways for good. I started diving! And to dive, I need the ocean. Trips to the coast are often - my best dives were in Tioman.
Then I moved on again, career wise - and this was when the pages of my passport started to move - FAST!
The rest is...history
I know, i can't continue living in my suitcase forever...If not for the inner voice in me, then its mom's : P
However, I dont think I can totally give up this addiction to travel. And I hope I dont have to.
Someone said, we can't have all that we desire, but God will give us all that we deserve.
I guess I deserve what I desired. I am having it all...
