High ground away from the coast made Mdina a natural site for a defensively minded community. Bronze age man was probably firts to settle here. The Phoenicians and Romans knew it respectively as Maleth and Melita while Arabs built walls 19 m high around the town they called Mdina, leaving the poorer people outside in an area that came to be known as Rabat. In the following centuries Mdina emerged as the islandīs capital and remained so until the Knights made Valetta the new capital in 1571. Today, fortified medival Mdina and Rabat shoul not be missed by any first time visitor. Mdinas honey-coloured walls and narrow winding alleways and Rabats catacombs and Roman remains make any visit memorable |
