Zhouzhuang is located 87 kilometres west of Shanghai, and only 38 kilometres east of Suzhou and is well-known for its beautiful environment and simple architecture.
A very old town for more than 900 years old, its architectural style is still well preserved. More than 60 percent of the residential houses were built during the Ming (1368-1644) and Qing (1644-1911) dynasties.
Also known as the "Venice of the Orient", Zhouzhuang is the most representative water-town in "Jiangnan" (Southern Jiangsu Province) and is supposed to be the first water-town that gained attention and popularity from tourists all over the world. Surrounded by canals that carry the gondola-like boats and running through the simple stone bridges.

Confucius Wed Jun 18, 2003 10:44 UTC I think Zhouzhuang is a tourist trap and agree with all of your useful tips here. Xitang is a better choice as well as Tongli or Luzhi. They all have the same nice bridges, canals and small shops. | Tea4Two Wed Jun 18, 2003 09:52 UTC Looking forward to visiting Zhouzhuang - your travelogue is inspiring. | dsantosh Tue Jun 17, 2003 09:46 UTC Welcome to VT..Excellant start..great pictures..nice info..awaiting more |
