"Zaire" Democratic Republic of Congo by eeyan
Democratic Republic of Congo Travel Guide: 221 reviews and 539 photos
OK so it was over 10 years ago since I was here but I thought it was a fascinating place with friendly people and scary police.
I was doing an overland trip with about 15 people and we all changed about $20 each in to zaires (the currency at the time). It came in this huge cardboard box and it took us an hour to count what we received.
The place where we did the deal- a town called Bunia.
I'm horrified by the events that have happened subsequently in this country and the surrounding area.
The roads were more of a concept than a reality. This was a good one.
We were lucky - it hadn't rained for a few days.
In theory you drive on the right in DRC however in reality you drive where you can
- Pros:Freindly people and good beer (1993)
- Cons:Ethnic strife and civil war (2003)
- In a nutshell:Hopefully in time it will go back on the travellers route map

The only thing that you could find easily was Primus beer. A very nice beer it was too. more travel advice

Great Pictures. I met up with some overland travelers in July of 1993 in Zaire - quite the anventures you overlanders have.
This is the #1 place I must go...always has been. I hope sometime soon it's safe enough for me to visit, but even if it's not, it's okay if it's my last trip. I will go. Thanks for this page. The pics say it all.
That is a great looking trip that you took part in! I wish that I had been there too to enjoy an adventure like that. My trip of 1973 was very tame by comparison!
Looks like a wonderful country, even with the potholes! I hope that the war will be over soon.
great stuff..adventure at it's Best, thanx for sharing
