CITY OF LIFE

Hong Kong is simply one of the most lively cities in the world, with constant excitement around the clock. There is a lot to do, & the views are just amazing. Shows what extremes humans can accomplish.

Hong Kong was officialy handed over back to China on July 1, 1997 (same day as Canada Day), and has been established as a Special Administrative Region within the People's Republic. Hong Kong is allowed to continue its capitalist economic system, at least for fifty years. It is still one of Asia's premiere financial centres, & is rapidly developing its tourism sector.

After the SARS epidemic & years of economic downturn, Hong Kong seems energized again, as it welcomes eager tourists from China. The Central Government has recently decided to let more Mainlanders visit Hong Kong & this has proven to be a big boost to Hong Kong's economy. Now, the streets are busier than ever! Those that do not like large crowds, be prepared!

Hong Kong is a kind of place that will overload your senses, with different, exotic & unexpected smells, sights & even tastes! No where else in the world is the night sky so brightly lit !

From the window of my apartment, the streets below are rarely empty & even in the wee hours, there is always something to do & have fun! Though I might be biased because it is my birthplace & hometown, Hong Kong is probably one of the best cities in the world. : )

Regions of Hong Kong

A tiny city with over seven and a half million inhabitants, Hong Kong is mainly divided into three districts:

i) Kowloon
ii) Hong Kong Island
iii) New Territories

Other islands include:
i) Lamma Island
iI) Lantau Island (Chep Lap Kok Airport)
iii) Tsing Yi Island
iv) Cheung Chau

Fun @ HK : )

Hong Kong Island is usually where travellers would spend most of their time, for there are many places where tourists can visit including Central( Hong Kong park & skyscrapers) Wan Chai (Hong Kong Convention Centre), Victoria Peak(Tram Cars & view), Ocean Park, Repulse Bay, Stanley & Lan Kwai Fong. Make sure you visit the beaches, for they are lots of fun, & the view....ooh la la ^_^ Also, drop by the Peak, for you don't want to miss out a free city-sized show of lights(at night)!

Kowloon is the peninsula that sticks out into Victoria Harbour. Attractions there include Women Market, Hong Kong Cultural Centre, Hong Kong Science Centre, Hong Kong History Museum & Wong Tai Sin Temple. Though Kowloon has more markets & shopping centres than Hong Kong island, Kowloon is mostly more for locals. Remember to go to Sai Kung & Clearwater Bay area for a hike, for that is where you can experience Hong Kong's natural splendors first hand.

New Territories covers the rest of Hong Kong, stretching from its southern boundary with Kowloon to its Northern boundary with Shenzhen, mainland China. Popular areas in New Territories include Shatin, Lo Wu(border crossing), Tuen Mun, Tsing Yi Island, Lantau Island & Saikung(yummy seafood!) Hiking here is also fun, for many parts of NT is parkland & nature reserves.

Hong Kong also has many outlaying islands, with Cheung Chau being the most popular destination. Hollywood actor Chow Yun Fat(Crouching TIger, Hidden Dragon) was actually born there. These islands have a distinct culture compared to the rest of HK, for they are home to boat people & the original inhabitants from Hong Kong from way back... It is fun to go to the islands for a one day sidetrip! Many outlaying islands are accessible by high speed ferry from Central.

HK is a lively and dynamic city. It outshines Toronto completely. I do admit, Toronto is a clean and healthy city. It is not difficult for me to cope as a CBC, since I fully understand Cantonese!
