Luggage And Bags: When coming here you most definately want to try and see the countryside...Peak District. For this you will need a back pack and preferably some walking boots. If you venture out towards areas like Kinder Scout it is a good idea to buy yourself an ordanace survey map and possibly a compass....people do get lost up there.
Clothing/Shoes/Weather Gear: Water Proofs
Thermals if in winter
Boots if hiking
Maps if hiking
Toiletries & Medical Supplies: No medical supplies are needed the hospitals are well equipped if you decide to pick a fight with the locals. We dont have flies or any thing like that so no insect repelant needed at any time of the year. Chemists open like the other usual buisseness and close roughly at 530pm...although if you buy the local paper "Sheffield Star" it will list late night opening and just a few chemists....usually until 10pm.
Photo Equipment: Photo eqipment is essential if you are going in to the country side...you will be faced with some amazing scenery..a huge contrast in a short distance from the city. Its relativly easy to get films developed and also a shop called Jessops does a digital service. Get them burnt on to a disc and I guess you have options to email at the few internet cafes that are springing up around Sheffield.
Camping/Beach/Outdoor Gear: Water proofs are a good idea no matter what time of the year it is if you are in the countryside. One thing you might experiance is that the weather can change dramatically in a matter of a few minutes. It can be sunny when you set off, not a cloud in the sky.....but half way through your walk the heavens can open. About 5 years ago I actually witnessed it snow in august...ten minutes before the snow the sun was shinning. Plenty of camp sites for caravans tents etc etc.....one of the nicest areas to stay is a village called Castleton....this is about 30 minutes drive from Sheffield city center and is situated in the peak district......well worth a visit.....you wont be dissapointed.
Miscellaneous: Mobile phone receptions are not so good if you are out in the hills...so dont fully rely on them. This applies for most networks.
The countryside around Sheffield holds a huge amount of history, but once again it doesnt jump up and bite you.....you have to search for it. It is an excellant area to go mountain biking.......off road 4x4......hiking......camping....
.caravaning........hangliding........etc etc
A good common sense thing to do like in most cities is buy a Sheffield A-Z here is a big city and for the sake of maybe four or five pounds the A-Z might save you a lot of hassle.
I know the information here is limited and basic........I live here and have always lived here if any further info is needed about sites etc etc please let me know and I will try to help. If you like hiking research the Pennine Way....world famous walk.
