Once a girlfriend visiting Lasko for the first time told me, "You live among mountains." Well, I wasn't living in Lasko anymore, although it is where I have spent most of my youth, but this funny remark of hers somethow made me realize for the first time that the most obvious characteristic of this town is that it is located in small basin among the hills and mountains. |
| | Lasko is quite a small town with population of about 4000, situated in southern part of Stajerska province, about 10 km from Celje. It is quite an old city. Celts used to live in the area while during Roman time there was spa in the area. Lasko was mentioned as market town in 1227 already, while in 1927 it was declared city.
Lasko lies on banks of Savinja river and settlements occupy virtually any flat surface between hills. Old city centre is on the eastern bank of Savinja river and is dominated by Hum hill, popular excursion point of people from Lasko.
Roads around Lasko are stretching towards many small settlements and villages in the surrounding hills which see Lasko as centre. Lasko is centre of comune of about 200 square km and 14000 people. A very foresty one with almost 80% of its surface covered by forests. Some of these places may be well worth visiting because despite these places seemingly being remote, there is life going on, there. |
Although Lasko is usually reffered as tourist town, because of the spa, it is predominantly industrial town. Lasko is most widely known for its brewery that has grown into one of the most successful companies in Slovenia and wider region during 1990-es. Still for its natural and tourist resources, Lasko may be quite a good destination for visiting. | | |
