| Hilly landscape in winter |
This page tells more about my personal experience then about Slovenia as a whole. Though I have spent most of my life in Slovenia, there are so many places here I know nothing about that it virtually scares me. But then again who can know it all?
Main turist trap of modern tourism lies in must see places. Even excellent tourist guides make lists of top destinations. Listen to them and you will visit Prague, Budapest and heurigen of Vienna, but you will never visit Slovenia. |
| About 50% of Slovenia is forest |
| | If you decide to visit Slovenia, you may fall for the same trap again, visiting Bled, Ljubljana and Piran. Though all of these destinatoins have certain appeal, they also represent deviation from what Slovenia really offers.
Slovenia without must see places proves to be one of most diverse European regions. There are countless destinations you may choose to visit . You may try joys of hill country, visit country tourism places to try country work (like grape harvest) or just to enjoy fresh air and food there. You may visit some of the rivers or streams or try some of the camping places. There are high mountains there as well as maritime province offering mediterannean experience and there is karst region near offering spectacular nature. Spas are great place to relax. Many medieval castles and picturesque towns lie scattered around the country and forests cover most of the land. You may choose to visit mountain of Pohorje or castle of Brezice, mount Kopitnik or Kamniska bistrica valley, Lasko spa or wine cellars of Stajerska or Primorje regions... you can even jump across the border to regions like Istra (Croatia)... and I don't thing you would find any of that a bad thing to do. And it is all up to 2 hours by car from central Slovenia.
I'll try to provide some of my impressions, here. |
Travelling Slovenia offers another benefit - people that are ready to become your friends. Though tourist traps will sooner or later appear in tourist centres, you are most likely to find Slovenians you contact (over the Net or in real life) genuinely interested about you. And even if they find you interesting enough to adopt you as some kind of family pet, they will leave you all the freedom you need to travel by yourself! | | | Lasko, typical Slovenian town |
